Oil and Gas

Customers in over 30 oil & gas producing regions around the world rely on 3M for improving performance across diverse and challenging applications. A track record that spans half a century and nearly 10,000 3M products & materials – we touch every aspect of this sector – from exploration, production and refining to transportation and marketing.

3M™ Glass Bubbles offer high strength and low thermal conductivity, and being inert particles, they are compatible with all other components of pipeline and riser insulating systems, including polyurethane, polypropylene and epoxy. In the oil and gas industry, glass bubbles are used to lower the density of drilling fluids and slurries.

Buoyancy and Insulation
As the search for oil and gas moves farther offshore, there is an increasing need for materials that can survive and perform in extreme sub sea environments. 3M™ Glass Bubbles have proven their reliability in adverse conditions, for applications such as reducing weight, increasing uplift of buoyancy modules and enhancing thermal insulation properties in risers and pipelines.

Low Density Cementing
Improved production, less remediation, reduced formation damage and better zonal isolation - just some of the advantages 3M™ Glass Bubbles offer over conventional density-reducing materials such as nitrogen foam and cenospheres. What’s more, they are easier to use, and assure more predictable and consistent results.

Low Density Drilling Fluids
Drilling fluids / muds made from 3M™ Glass Bubbles are so reliable that at-balance or near-balanced drilling can be performed even in sensitive strata, without significant risk to the formation. 3M™ Glass Bubbles provide an incompressible, single-phase fluid – one with simple, predictable hydraulics that can survive down hole pressures as high as 18,000 psi. 3M™ Glass Bubbles are non-volatile, stable additives that provide drilling muds with durable low density properties, both during and after the drilling job. Muds formulated with 3M™ Glass Bubbles can be reused on multiple neighboring wells where low density drilling is required.
