3M helps your utilities, by focusing on concerns about safety, service restoration, operating costs and managing assets, which are some of the difficult challenges when infrastructure is buried. 3M™ Dynatel™ solutions mark, locate and map buried infrastructure. These include:
  • Passive markers, operating at a specific frequency for each utility are available in configurations depending on the depth of the buried infrastructure
  • Intelligent active markers utilizing RFID technology allows ‘engraving’ information to the buried marker (US)
  • Locators that read the marker information and allow a precise determination of buried features
  • Solutions that transfer information to GPS units to create a digital map of buried infrastructure, accessible from any computer

Many utilities have strategies to deploy communication networks alongside existing infrastructures for communicating with their customers or to other service providers. 3M offers utilities, a broad range of solutions to connect, protect or diagnose optical fiber or copper networks. These include:

  • Solutions to splice, terminate, connect, identify and manage fibers or copper in central offices or their remote terminals
  • Durable and reliable splicing and splice enclosures for their outside plant (aerial or buried)
  • Connectivity and diagnostic solutions at the customer’s premise

The Dynatel Cable / Pipe locator and Faultfinder M Series from 3M helps to locate the cable path with a highly accurate multi-antenna design for various user-defined locating modes like:

  • Directional Peak
  • Multi-Directional Null
  • An ultra-sensitive Special Peak mode for extreme depths
What’s more, our most advanced locator series - the M-iD locator – offers the ability to locate active and passive electronic markers.

3M™ Dynatel™ Marker Locator 1420-iD Series (PDF, 3.46MB)
A feature exclusive to the Dynatel EMS locator is the ability to read, write and lock programmed information into 3M™ Electronic Marker System iD Ball Markers 1400 Series. The 1420-iD series also pinpoints the exact depth and location of all existing models of properly installed underground passive EMS markers — easily differentiating between standard frequencies. As with the 2200M-iD locators, detailed information can be read, stored with date/time stamp and transmitted back to your PC for enhanced resource management through a standard RS232 serial

As referenced in a previous section, the 1420-iD series is now compatible with selected GPS/GIS instruments to greatly simplify the mapping process.
